North Tyneside Council has drawn up a shortlist of four significant North Shields figures to name the square and wants residents to take part in a vote.

Thomas Brown Square – Thomas Brown, a local hero, is celebrated for his remarkable achievement of rescuing the Enigma codes from a sinking U-Boat, which significantly contributed to hastening the end of World War II. The Thomas Brown Room at The Exchange 1856 pays tribute to his gallantry, and plans are underway for a public memorial as part of the North Shields Public Artworks program.

Charles Minto Square – Charles Minto, originally from Nigeria, arrived in North Shields in the 1920s and founded the International Coloured Mutual Aid Association, providing invaluable assistance to ethnic minority families in the town. To commemorate his significant contributions, plans are in place to install a blue plaque at the former hostel site during Black History Month in October, highlighting his impact on the community.

Mary Ann Macham Square – Recognizing the inspiring journey of Mary Ann Macham, who escaped slavery in Virginia, settled in North Shields. A sculpture is due to be unveiled on the Embankment walkway as part of the North Shields Public Artworks program, honouring her remarkable legacy.

Ellen Lee Square – This nomination commemorates the bravery and heroism of Mrs. Ellen Lee, who courageously saved numerous lives following the devastating bombing of Wilkinson’s Factory in North Shields during May 1941. Recently, a blue plaque was installed near the former factory, honoring her selflessness and valiance.
