Feathercoats and Fables – an animated story.

This short animation tells the tale of how North Shields was suppressed for centuries by its bigger and more powerful neighbour – Newcastle.

Using its considerable wealth and power, the City controlled all aspects of trade on the River Tyne. Using Intimidation, Imprisonment and often Violence, The Free Hostmen, Aldermen and Corporation of Newcastle effectively stifled the development of Shields for hundreds of Years.

It’s also the story of one man (Ralph Gardner) and his quest to overturn the Newcastle monopoly. Our story is told in the style of a Fable, through the eyes of the birds synonymous with the city and the town – The Magpie and The Robin.
